You never start spinning big parties right away.

Unless you luck out like Jamila Jamil, whose very first gig was for Elton John’s birthday party.

But for everyone else, it takes some time before getting to the big events.

My very first “DJ gig” was me assisting a camp counselor in like 7th grade.

I think I still have the picture of it.

He let me get on the mic to hype it up and I did a call and response.

“When I say B, you say K.”

“B...K...B...K...B...K...K...B!”

I messed up the call and response!

All the kids were laughing.

I was, too, to play off the embarrassment.

But the first gig I did was a friend’s birthday party in high school.

I had to set up in the kitchen because I didn’t bring a table and they didn’t have one.

I told them I just had underground hip hop, but they didn’t care.

So I set up and did my thing.

I was supposed to make $50 that day.

But someone stole the money. (Wack)

I kept going though. And my freshman year in college I got to open up for the X-Ecutioners.

That was a dream!

The lady who hooked up that gig was a friend of mine.

She literally said “get your crates and let’s go!”

I just followed her on stage and did my thing!

It was pretty cool and my first time opening for a notable group like that.

Throughout my time there, I got to DJ some pretty cool events. I kept doing shows and got my name out there.

Then I remember doing some big corporate events that came through referrals, and eventually a talent agency.

All this was a gradual progression.

That progression from kitchen setups to the X-Ecutioners to corporate? That was my Inner to Middle to Outer Circle transition.

Here’s how it works.

The Concentric Circle Capture

If you are looking to book gigs as a DJ, there is a progression that I notice 99% of DJs follow. But when you see the full breakdown, you’ll understand this as a strategy and be able to consciously make more bookings happen.

It all starts here…
